   Course #: Su-7102-1

   Total Cost: $115.00

The focus of the course will be on fun and imagination while exploring a fascinating rediscovered, ancient art form. Encaustic Painting, applying coloured beeswax to various surfaces, dates back more than 3000 years ago and originates in Greece. The term “Encaustic” is derived from the Greek word “enkaien” and it means, “to burn into”. The technique was lost for hundreds of years, but rediscovered in the 18th century. The modern form of Encaustic uses specially developed electric painting tools that keep the coloured wax at the right working temperature. Encaustic paintings seem to light from within – the colours are exceptionally bright, because the light does not just get reflected from the surface of the painting, but penetrates the different wax layers. Basic Encaustic techniques are very easy to learn and do not require any previous painting or drawing skills. Bring; An apron or old shirt to protect clothing, A roll of paper towel, Approx. 30 sheets of scrap paper (letter size), Scissors, glue, ruler, cutting knife, piece of soft cloth (a piece of old pantyhose will do), extension cord. Thea will provide Encaustic supplies.

Beginning painters are often challenged because they need to develop their drawing skills. One quickly discovers that if “you can’t draw it, you probably won’t be able to paint it.” Confident drawers with little painting experience can find themselves frustrated in their transition to brush and paint. This class will focus on the inter-dependence and intimate relationship between drawing and painting. The class is also highly recommended for experienced 2D artists wishing to improve or refresh their skills, especially those with an interest in landscape art. Mornings will focus on drawing exercises; working from the student’s own photos or objects. Morning sessions will serve as a preliminary for the afternoon’s painting class. Afternoons will be devoted to painting the student’s subject utilizing the value and design lessons from the morning’s drawing class. Water media (acrylic and watercolor) only. As Leonardo da Vinci taught us ~ drawing is painting and painting is drawing. Supplies: Drawing ~ pencils, preferably the thick, woodless variety, 2B or darker. Charcoal or graphite stick (optional but recommended), art eraser, drawing book ~ the bigger the better. Painting ~ three primary colors ~ yellow, blue, red plus white. Any other colors you wish to bring are okay. Painting surface of your choice ~ canvas, paper or canvas pad depending on the medium you favor. Brushes ~ at least one big for large areas of paint and one smaller for detail, water containers, paper towels, and a hairdryer. There is an option to take drawing or painting section only, please enquire.
